Well, now the cities of Boston and Cambridge (not to mention Providence, Augusta, Hartford, Concord, and Montpelier) have their own supply of New England flags. The Stars-and-Stripes are back flying from most flag poles around the region. You never really notice just how common the American flag is until it is suddenly replaced.

There are proposals to keep flying the Pine Flag in several places. Governor Patrick said he might be willing to support a plan to fly it alongside (and below) the Stars-and-Stripes at the State House. The mayor of Somerville is apparently thinking of keeping one flying from the tower on Prospect Hill. More local history there since the site claims to be where the first American flag was raised back in 1776. The Children of Liberty ‘donated’ their largest flag for this site, so I wonder if some of the city officials weren’t somehow in on it.

At first I figured these practical jokes were just a bunch of college kids; an outgrowth of the MIT hack culture. I’ve gotten less sure of this as time goes on. If the ‘Children’ are following in the footsteps of their namesake, there may be some very well known, and very wealthy, figures involved.
